A Village with Ancient Roots

The history of Cockington Village stretches back more than a millennium. It was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the manor of Torre. At the time, it was a small agricultural community, surrounded by fertile fields and dense woodland.

During the medieval period, the village was owned by the FitzRalph family before passing into the hands of the Cary family, whose influence shaped the village into a thriving estate. The Carys expanded and developed Cockington Court, which became the centrepiece of the village and remains one of its most treasured landmarks today.

Traditional Crafts and Rural Life

For centuries, Cockington was a bustling hub of traditional crafts and trades. The forge, still in operation in the village, served as a vital resource for the community, producing tools and equipment essential for daily life. The surrounding farmland and water-powered mills provided the foundation for a self-sufficient rural economy.

The quaint thatched cottages that line the streets of Cockington Village were home to generations of villagers who worked the land or practised these rural crafts. Their enduring charm today stands as a testament to the hardworking community that once called the village home.

Victorian Cockington: A Tourist’s Dream

By the 19th century, Cockington Village had become a popular retreat for Victorian tourists. With Torquay thriving as a fashionable seaside destination, Cockington offered a tranquil escape from the bustling coast. Visitors were drawn to its peaceful beauty, its well-kept gardens, and the timeless appeal of its rural charm.

The Mallock family, who owned the estate during this period, were instrumental in preserving Cockington’s unique character. Their stewardship ensured that the village retained its authenticity while welcoming visitors eager to experience its quaint appeal.
