Cockington: A Devon Village Full of Character, Charm and History

Tucked away in the heart of Torbay, just minutes from the stunning seafront of Torquay, lies Cockington Village, a place where thatched roofs, winding lanes and artisan craft come together in a truly unique setting. Whether you’re drawn in by the landscape, the history, or the locally made gin, there’s no doubt that it leaves a lasting impression.

A Village Rooted In History

Cockington’s story begins over a thousand years ago. First recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the manor of Torre, it started life as a small agricultural settlement surrounded by woodland and farmland. Over the centuries, Cockington passed through the hands of influential families, the FitzRalphs, the Carys, and later the Mallocks, each leaving their mark on the estate and its architecture.

The Cary family, who owned the estate during the medieval period, transformed the village into a thriving rural estate. They developed Cockington Court, now one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks. In the 19th century, under the Mallocks’ stewardship, the village gained popularity as a tranquil retreat for Victorian holidaymakers seeking calm away from the busy resorts of Torquay.

Cockington Today: A Hub For Creativity and Adventure

Despite its deep roots, Cockington isn’t frozen in time. It’s a living, breathing village with a vibrant creative scene. Today, the heart of the village beats at Cockington Court, a Grade II* listed manor house that has been reinvented as a centre for arts, crafts, and independent makers.

From glassblowers and blacksmiths to ceramicists and jewellers, it's is now a home for creativity. The Stable Yard Studios and Sea Change Units house dozens of local businesses—including us at Torbay Gin—each adding to the village’s modern-day story.

After a walk around the estate, you can relax at the Seven Dials café, pop into Weavers Cottage or The School House for a cream tea, or enjoy a meal and a pint at the Drum Inn, a classic country pub with one of the best beer gardens in South Devon.

Surrounding the village is Cockington Country Park—around 450 acres of woodland, ornamental gardens, lakes and open green space. With clearly marked walking trails, it’s a peaceful haven for dog walkers, families, and anyone looking to slow down and breathe in the fresh Devon air.

The park is also home to seasonal events like outdoor theatre, garden tours, craft fairs, and more, making each visit feel slightly different depending on the time of year.

Why Torbay Gin Calls Cockington Home

Cockington isn’t just a backdrop for us—it’s our inspiration. We started off in the Sea Change Units before moving to the Stable Yard Studios in 2023 to be even closer to the heart of the village. It’s here that we craft our gins, surrounded by the makers, stories, and landscapes that shape our flavour and philosophy.

Our signature blue gin, for example, was inspired by the ever-changing tones of the Torbay coastline. It’s crafted with locally inspired botanicals like sea buckthorn and South Devon seaweed, and when tonic is added, it transforms to a pinkish hue—just like a sunset over the bay.

We’re proud to be part of a thriving community of creatives. From day one, we’ve wanted to build something that honours the place we call home.
